Narrative
According to the 1900 NY census, T623, roll #1088, E.D. 175, sheet 21, line 86, Tillie could not read, could not write, and could not speak English. Richard Zemon recalls his mother (Ethel) speaking to Tillie in Yiddish because Tillie did not speak English.
The 1920 NY census, ED 1190, sheet 15B, shows that she could speak English.
Name shown as Tillie in the 1920 census, as Tobie almost everywhere else.
Narrative
Richard Zemon heard that they may have come from Odessa but that may have simply been an embarcation point.
The 1900 NY Census Soundex film (FHC #1246636) lists the family's address as 93 Hester, Manhattan, New York, New York.
