Narrative
by Norm Robertson II, "Narrative Family History"
Dix's mother, Laura Mabelle Dunbar, was born in Lincoln, Illinois, in 1859. She ahd a younger half sister, Katherine Bates, her father, Erastus Dunbar, was killed in the Civil War and her mother remarried. She and Harry J. Strong were married, probably in about 1877 and lived in and around Chicago where Harry worked. They lived in Rogers Park, then a suburb not part of Chicago, until 1891. Carrie, Warren, and Dix were born there. In 1891 they moved to a house on Aldine Square. It is still there at about 36th Street and the IC tracks. Dix talked about playing around the Douglas monument (Douglas of the Lincoln Douglas debates) which was in the middle of the square. It is still there although Douglas' body has been removed and reburied in Springfield. In the next four years they moved to 58th and Calument, then to 61st and Prairie. In about 1896 they moved to Morgan Park and then Mr. Strong had a house built on 110th Street near Ashland. This was the home Dix remembered the most and talked about the most.
