Deceased Name: I. RICHARD ZEMON, PSYCHOLOGIST

I. Richard Zemon, 69, of Arlington Heights, a retired counseling psychologist, past president of the Northwest Suburban Shrine Club and active member of other fraternal organizations, died Wednesday in Northwest Community Hospital, Arlington Heights.

Mr. Zemon, who was born in New York City, received his bachelor's degree in counseling psychology from the University of Wisconsin, and later earned advanced degrees in his field.

He was a counseling psychologist for the New Jersey Department of Employment Security, Trenton, and for the Illinois Department of Employment Security, Chicago. He also worked for Jewish Vocational Service in Chicago, had a private counseling practice and did contract work for DCFS in Cook County until his retirement in 1996.

He was past president of the Northwest Suburban Shrine club in 1995, said current president Bill McMinn. He joined the Masons in 1973 and had been a member of the Scottish Rite in Chicago and the Arlington Heights Masonic Lodge before transferring to Masonic Lodge 314 AF and AM, Palatine, in 1986, said Bruce Stephens, Lodge 314 secretary. "He filled in as an officer for us last year," Stephens said. "He was always willing to help."

"He was willing to serve on any committee, and he helped raise funds for Rotary projects," said Dr. Jeff Socher, Sunrise Rotary Club president. "He was a child-advocate psychologist who had a deep concern for family and a quick-witted sense of humor."

"He was an extraordinarily generous and warm person," said his wife, Lorraine. "He was a strong personality. His favorite song was `I Gotta Be Me.' He was quite intelligent. He loved his family."

His wife said he also was a free-lance photographer for newspapers in Trenton and a wedding photographer.

Other survivors include his son, Arthur; and two grandsons.

Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday in Ahlgrim & Sons Funeral Home, 201 N. Northwest Highway, Palatine. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
